Matthew Furse is a trial attorney, strategic advisor, and partner in the firm’s litigation section.
Matthew’s practice is focused on representing entrepreneurs, investors, and companies in high-stakes, bet-the-company business disputes, including business fraud, securities, M&A litigation, shareholder derivative claims, business divorce, and corporate governance disputes. He advises across many sectors including financial services, energy, hospitality, medical, technology, and real estate. Much of his practice involves allegations of securities fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and director or officer wrongdoing. As many of his cases involve the confluence of fraud and insolvency, he has significant turnaround and restructuring experience, and regularly represents trustees and receivers as special counsel, in addition to debtors and creditors in insolvency litigation.
In his regulatory practice, Matthew also represents directors and officers of public and private companies in SEC investigations, defending allegations under the 1933 and 1934 Securities Acts, and the Investment Advisers Act. These include 10b-5 and other antifraud violations, Reg D/failure to register, insider trading, and fiduciary litigation. He has also represented CPAs in Sarbanes-Oxley proceedings before the PCAOB in Washington D.C. With his experience in both the U.S. and U.K. Matthew is also adept at cases with an international or cross-border dimension.
Client and solution-focused, Matthew delivers responsive, commercial, practical, accessible advice and business solutions. He is an experienced and tenacious trial advocate and has over 15 years’ experience as first chair/lead counsel, including federal district and bankruptcy courts across the US (including New York and Delaware), the High Court in London, and arbitration in both the US and UK. He is frequently complimented by Judges for his “intellectual rigor”, as well as the quality of his written and oral advocacy. Many of his cases involve robust cross-examination on fraud and dishonesty issues.
Prior to joining Platt Richmond, Matthew practiced as a member of the trial practice of large full-service Dallas firm. He began his legal career in London, before moving to Dallas in 2016.
